JULY 2024 ISSUE

你好 Nǐ hăo,

It’s July already, and we’re into the second half of the year now, with school holidays on now. Soon it will be September, the final week of the third school term, and New Zealand Chinese Language Week!

There are lots of events and activities being planned, and we are keen to hear from you about what you have planned for New Zealand Chinese Language Week – and for National Dumpling Day, September 26.

We have extended the deadline for 10 For 10 applications until 5th August!

The New Zealand Chinese Language Week Trust is set to take 10 young Kiwis to China for 10 days as a special initiative to celebrate 10 years of the New Zealand Chinese Language Week.

Participants will visit five cities - Guangzhou, Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Shenzhen. Highlights will include receptions at the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing and the New Zealand Consulate in Guangzhou, visits to BYD headquarters, the New Zealand Centre at Peking University, and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Conservation.

The trip will leave New Zealand on 9 September and return 20 September.

Everyone (well, ok, almost everyone) loves these gorgeous little parcels of deliciousness, and what better way to celebrate them but on their own day?

National Dumpling Day is September 26, and it’s a lovely excuse to get together a group of friends or family (or both!)  and share some dumplings.

You can make your own, perhaps using this great recipe by Connie Clarkson. Singapore-born Connie Clarkson is one of Auckland’s best known foodies, and helped celebrate NZCLW in 2022.

Or you can take advantage of an initiative with the Hospitality Association and the Restaurant Association, which is working with members to offer special National Dumpling Day meals for NZCLW this year. More details are to come in later newsletters and on our social media channels, so make sure you are following @_nzclw and keep in the loop.

ChineseX is a challenging Chinese contest where schools from across New Zealand compete against each other in teams to complete the challenges. It includes Chinese questions, puzzles as well as fun games, and is a great opportunity to learn and interact with other Chinese language learners.

This year, more than 400 participants from 10 schools will compete on Wednesday September 25 at Massey University’s Auckland campus.

The New Zealand Chinese Language Week Trust is all about encouraging New Zealanders to give Chinese a go. To learn Chinese, you need to have access to resources, and this year, a new activity will be a Chinese language children’s book fair in five libraries across the country.

More than 100 books will be made available to Auckland, Hastings, Marlborough, Christchurch, and Dunedin libraries with displays, public readings, and other events to mark the books’ arrival during NZCLW from September 22 to September 28 this year.

It’s an exciting new development, particularly as librarians tell us that foreign language texts, especially Chinese ones, are very popular.

Also popular are Te Reo Māori and Pasifika texts. NZCLW publishes a tri-lingual children’s book in Te Reo, English, and Chinese each year, and this year, Little Kiwi’s Matariki will be donated free of charge to all libraries and schools around New Zealand for NZCLW. Some copies will be available to buy as well.

Anyone in Auckland or Wellington during September should keep an eye out for a special screening of “Viva La Vida” Original title: 我们一起摇太阳

This film is a 2024 Chinese romantic comedy-drama co-written and directed by Han Yan. The final chapter in Han Yan's "Life Trilogy", it revolves around two people suffering from serious illnesses who meet and embark on a healing journey full of love and strength.

Soon, we will announce our 10th anniversary Chinese Language Superstars – these are people undergoing a language learning journey which they are keen to share with other New Zealanders.

They may not be fluent, but they have an enthusiasm for Chinese language and they want to encourage others to have a go at learning Chinese too.

This year’s Youth Ambassadors are being selected right now too. These are young people who have done well in the Bridge competitions nationally.

We hope to introduce them to you in our next newsletter.

Time is flying and it will be September before we know it, so it’s a good time now to start thinking how you would like to take part in New Zealand Chinese Language Week this year.

Please email the project team about any events and activities you are working on – we’d love to hear about them! We also invite members of the community to register their events at the link below, so we can share them with supporters through our social media and other channels.

Two years ago, fabulous pop star Venice Qin unveiled her song “Call My Name” at the NZCLW opening ceremony, and since then, she’s going on to achieve great things.

Venice secured a contract with Sony Australia, has put out an EP, and her most recent news is that she is to sing at the Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo 41, making her Colorado debut with Dixon Dallas. Venice is supporting diversity in many ways, as this is a rodeo organised by the Colorado Gay Rodeo Association, the longest continuous running gay rodeo in the United States.

Venice is a woman of many talents!
